The parameters of the indexing can be changed on the Indexing tab.
With the indexing settings one can control when to index files, which location to use for storing the index data and other parameters which affect the performance of the application.
When loading data
These settings affects the speed of loading files when the indexed location is opened.
In the default mode (Load from index) the indexed files are shown as quickly as possible without actually checking the file system.
Alternatively, when browsing the indexed folder, the ImageRanger may try to discover new files copied with other sotware applications (Discover new files / folders).
Also each indexed file can be checked for any changes made since the last restart (Chech file changes).
Indexing mode
When a folder is opened, ImageRanger tries to analyze the files to organize fast image search and configure the facial recognition engine. This indexing process can start automatically or may require user confirmation every time when a folder is opened. For some users which want to quickly see their files the indexing can be skipped.
Use Automatic indexing mode if you want use facial recognition and search functions with all your files.
Use Ask when needed mode if you want to manually confirm the indexing process and skip the indexing when needed.
Index files location
To speed up file search, ImageRanger writes information about your files in special index files. When ImageRanger is used with remote storage systems like (NAS or USB drives) it is more convenient to keep index files inside each remote folder.
Such index location is called Distributed and ImageRanger will automatically pickup index information when browsing your remote storage systems.
The Distributed index is preferred if the location of your images frequently changes (for example, USB drives may have different mounting paths).
To assign a specific folder to store index information, choose "Custom Location" in the drop down menu.
Reset index...
This function does not affect your original image files or any associated capture information. Index files are used internally by ImageRanger to speed up image search and other software functions. When index information is written in a temporary folder (default setting) it is possible to clear the index files in order to free storage space on your main storage drive.
Once the index files are removed, ImageRanger will need to index your photos again.
Indexing threads
Depending on the CPU hardware available, configure the number of threads to increase the performance of the indexing procedure.
Notice that more threads will require more system resources and it may affect the performance of the other software running on the same computer.
 Loading mode
When opening a folder the ImageRanger may check if any files were added or changed by another software.
