ImageRanger needs to detect faces on each photo in order to organize its facial recognition engine. Additionally each file containing meta information such as keywords, rating, GPS location, etc. is analyzed.
This important file analysis is a part of the indexing routine which must be performed once for each folder you browse.
Indexing settings
When a new folder is selected, the ImageRanger starts the indexing process.
At any time the indexing process can be reconfigured or stopped by pressing the Indexing settings button.
To restart the indexing go to the main menu Tools > Reindex Current Location
Indexing confirmation
When a folder is opened with ImageRanger, a confirmation window can be displayed.
It is recommended to skip indexing (choosing 'do not index now') in the following cases:
- when you don't plan to use facial recognition features and want to simply browse your files
- when you plan to move the files to another folder
In other cases, it is recommended to choose Proceed with indexing or Always index automatically.
If the automatic indexing is turned on, the confirmation dialog will not be shown on the screen.
To switch back from the automatic indexing, choose a different Indexing Mode option in the setting dialog.
The location of the index files can be changed in the application settings.
Refreshing location
To refresh the view containing currently visible files, press the Refresh button on top of the screen.
The following refresh modes can be selected in the drop down list:
Reload from index
Choose this folder refresh option to clear currently applied file filters. The main thumbnail view will be populated again by loading data from the index database. This is the fastest way but the software doesn't check if the actual files are available on the storage drive.
Discover changes
Using this refresh option the ImageRanger will check the contents of the indexed files and update the internal index database. If any of the files was changed by another application, the changes will be discovered and stored in the internal program index database.
How to continue browsing from the last position
When the ImageRanger is started again, it automatically tries to locate the last file(s) which was visible on the screen during the previous running session.
The previous sorting settings are also automatically restored.
In some cases when there are many files loading, this process may be unintentionally interrupted by the user, for example by selecting another file.
To quickly select the last changed file, choose Select > Select Last Changed File using the main program menu.
