Face Recognition

The face recognition interface is designed to help you find pictures of known people by matching faces with the pre-configured database of collected face samples.

To start configuring face recognition, select one or more photos which contain faces.

The current face recognition result is shown in the People Panel.

To change the results of the current face recognition, select an appropriate person name under each face image shown in the People panel.

Once the face is manually tagged, the face tag information is written directly into the image file and ImageRanger shows it with a small green check icon.

When multiple images are selected, only the first few photos containing faces are used to extract and show the faces in the People panel.

Face tag formats

When a face is marked manually with ImageRanger the face data is written into the XMP meta data section of the original file using different face tagging formats to achieve compatibility with a wide range of other software applications.

On the other hand, when a new image is found, ImageRanger will try to automatically import face and person name information, even when the face was originally tagged with the help from another software application.

Automatic Face Recognition

The face recognition engine automatically updates face tags each time when faces are manually tagged.

To see all automatically recognized faces, choose Content > Portraits > Auto Recognized Faces

To correct the results of automatic face recognition choose Reject / Confirm buttons   located directly on the face thumbnail image as shown below.

When a result of face recognition is confirmed, the face tag information is written directly into the image file (EXIF metadata) and the name is shown with the green check icon.

How to reset manually tagged faces

To remove face tag information from the image files choose Tools > Clear Face Tags in the main menu.

How to reset face recognition engine

The face recognition engine continuously learns from the manually tagged faces.

When manual face tags are incorrectly set, it might be useful to reset face recognition engine. In this case the person names and all face samples are removed from software settings.

Note that, files with manually tagged faces are not affected and the face tags are not removed from the image meta data.

To reset face recognition engine choose Settings > Search > Reset face recognition... in the main menu.
