Setting Metadata

EXIF, IPTC, XMP metadata

Historically different software vendors used various methods to write image metadata into the image files.

As a result there are currently multiple formats and encodings which can be found in images.

Some information, such as image author, copyright, etc. can be written in various ways.

For example, EXIF:Artist, XMP:Creator and IPTC:Byline metadata records usually store the same information but using various names and encodings.

It is up to the user to decide which metadata record to use for storing specific values.

Line breaks

Some metadata fields like EXIF:ImageDescription support multiline text which contain line break characters.

When Multiline checkbox is unchecked the line break symbols will be removed and the text is stored as a single line.

XMP metadata for non-image files

When ImageRanger is configured to run in read-only mode or for certain file types (primarily non image files) it is possible to set XMP metadata, which will be stored in the sidecar files.

In this case only XMP metadata is written in the sidecar files. When setting EXIF/IPTC data in the sidecar files, the alternative XMP fields are used automatically.

How to edit existing metadata records

Using the file info panel one can edit EXIF / IPTC / XMP values directly.
