Automatic Sorting

Each time when the ImageRanger is started again, it automatically restores the last sorting mode.

It is possible to sort files using different automatic sorting modes:

Sorting Files

- Type (sort file using file name extension information)

- Size (sort using file size in bytes)

- Time (ImageRanger will use image capture time when available or file creation time)

- Rating (Rating value is recorded in the metadata of the image or in the ImageRanger index)

- File name

- Duplicates (This option allows to sort by number of duplicate files found)

- Faces (Sort by number of faces detected on the image. Sorting by Faces allows to quickly find group portraits.)

- Resolution (Total number of pixels in the image)

- Keywords (Total number of keywords. To quickly find images with no assigned keywords use sorting by Keywords Count.)

- Random (Generates a randomly sorted view)

Manual Sorting

When Sorted Manually mode is selected, ImageRanger will sort files in user defined order.

To move a file in different directions, use the View sub menu in the Main Menu. There are also keyboard shortcuts available:

The same actions are also accessible in the context menu by pressing Right Mouse Button on the thumbnail image view and choosing View menu.

It is possible to move several images simultaneously up or down in the sorting hierarchy by selecting them first.

Once the new folder is selected in the Browse view, the automatic sorting options are cleared and default Manual Sorting mode is used.

Hiding / Unhiding Files

To hide any number of files, first select the corresponding thumbnail picture on the thumbnail view.

Choose View then Hide Selected using the Main Menu or in the contextual menu when you make a right click on the file thumbnail.

The number of hidden files is always visible in the top area of the thumbnail view:

The currently hidden files and manual sorting order are stored with each Collection file (.irg) which could be later loaded to restore hidden items and manual sorting order.

This way, it is possible to create multiple views of the same content by saving and loading different Collection files.

Saving Sorted Collections

The manual sorted order is saved automatically when files are sorted manually.

However, it is possible to store and restore ImageRanger collection files each with its own user defined manual sorting and hidden files information.

To store your current ordering and a list of all shown images in the collection file, use File, Save As in the Main Menu.

When Collection file is loaded, the manual sorting order is restored from the collection data.
